Comm Tech Portfolio: Theme

I chose this image because it represents the flow of time, from the beginning of your life to the fading abyss of death.  I utilized the fact that I was in a moving car, while it rained, passing a light post as all of these elements came together to create this abstract image.  In order to draw attention to the orange lighted rain I increased the black levels while sharpening the image.  I believe the strongest aspect of the image to be the stark contrast between the intense, black background and the vibrant orange along with how the movement of the rain was captured.  I believe the weakest component of the image to be the presence of noise, as it may cause the viewer’s focus away from the subject.

This image was an attempt to show the intricate design of the snow flakes and to represent the beauty of nature.  I overcame the limitation of not having a macro lens by getting close without making it impossible to properly focus.  I increased the black level and decreased the saturation.  I believe the strongest part of the image to be the lighting and the detail of the snowflakes.  The weakest part of the image is also the detail as I know it isn’t as detailed as it would have been if I had had a macro lens.

This image was taken during the X-mas holidays, an occasion that provokes a general feeling of unity and happiness between families. I overcame the limited light by lowering the shutter speed.  I increased the black level and sharpened the image slightly.  I believe the strongest part of the image to be beads of bokeh light surrounding the slightly blurred X-mas ornament coupled with some tree (fake) pine needles in the foreground to create a sense of depth.  The weakest part of the image is the blown out lights, which may distract the viewer from concentrating on the image as a whole.

This image is significant as it is a representation of how fleeting time can be, as it seems to pass you by. I overcame the amount of light that was provided and that I was in a moving vehicle by utilizing and using it to my advantage.  I used the paintbrush tool coupled with black colour to narrow the amount of radiating light in order to focus the attention on the line of light. The strongest aspect of this image is the flowing lines of light as it guides the viewer through the image.  The weakest part of this image is the presence of noise, as it gives a grainy quality to the image.

This is an image which I’ve wanted to take for a while as I believe the light against these spider webs create an almost haunting affect.  It is significant as it shows the consistency of nature’s creatures as all of the curves seem to be similar in shape.  I overcame the lack of light by lowering the shutter speed, which in turn created the issue of blur that I corrected by leaning hard against the wall and propping the camera up on my knee in order to reduce camera shake.  I increased both the contrast and brightness in order to make the webs stand out, while also using the paintbrush tool to create a vignette.  I believe the strongest aspect of the image to be how the light hit the webs as it adds an almost metal/steel like quality to the webs.  The weakest aspect of the image is the lack of detail.

This image is significant as it presents an example of nature’s beauty and artistry.  I overcame the interference of other tree branches by pushing them back with my hands then stepping in front of them to stop them from swinging back into view.  I increased both the black and white levels of this image in order to bring out the vibrant colours compared to the shadows. I believe the strongest aspect of the image to be the details of the leaf, as the veins coupled with the light work together to create a visually pleasing image.  The weakest aspect of the image is the noise as it adds a slight grain to some parts of the image.

The theme consistent throughout these images is light as it plays a significant role to the composition and aesthetics of the images.  I chose light as the theme because you can use and manipulate it in numerous ways to create a variety of interesting images.
